DANE’S WRISTS WERE shackled to the wall in iron manacles. His arms had long ago gone numb. He couldn’t feel his fingers anymore either. His sprained ankle, though somewhat healed, still throbbed. It seemed years ago since that had happened.

His head drooped forward, his vision blurry, though from sweat or blood, he really didn’t know any more. From the moment he had been imprisoned, the guards used him as a punching bag. If he could get out of those manacles, he could...what? Fight back?

He heaved a sigh, wondering what had become of Skye. He worried about her with that chieftain fellow, Nyan. Even if he could get to the time bender, he’d never leave Skye behind.

He had to find some way to get out of this cell. But even if he could, he wasn’t sure how far he would get. He was half-dead from starvation. The guards would only allow him a trickle of water. Just enough to keep him alive. Just before they would beat him again.

A drop of blood oozed into his swollen left eye. He blinked, trying to make it go away. It seemed to blur his vision even more. He could hear muffled voices and closed his eyes. He could stand torture. He was no weakling. But there was only so much a man could take before breaking.

Footsteps paused outside his cell, and then he heard the clank of the key in the lock. The heavy metal door creaked open and then silence. Dane stared at a pair of booted feet and knew it was Sovold before him.

“Now, healer, it is time to meet your maker.”

The guards unlocked his wrists, letting his arms fall limply to his side. He crumpled to the cold metal floor, his fingers tingling painfully as the blood rushed back to the tips. The guards picked him up under his arms and dragged him out of the cell, leading him down a shadowy corridor.

“Put him there,” Sovold demanded.

The men lifted Dane and placed him on a metal table. He shivered, staring into a bright light overhead. Sovold leaned over, directly into Dane’s line of sight, and gave a wicked smile.

“Look at you now, healer. You are at my mercy. Who will save you?”

He moved away momentarily, snapping at the guards. “Strap him down. Make sure he cannot get free.” Then he appeared once again in Dane’s sight. “Before you die, I thought you should know your female companion and I are to be married.”

Dane struggled to sit up, straining to reach Sovold’s neck but the guards held him down. Sovold gave a hearty chuckle.

“Leave...her...alone,” Dane croaked.

“Or what? There is nothing you can do. She is mine at last and I have secured my position with Nyan.” He disappeared out of Dane’s view, but Dane could hear him pacing nearby. “For many moons, I have worked to make it so. When you and the flame-haired girl arrived, it was the first sign. When Nyan killed Odren, it was the second sign. It was time for me to set my plan into action.
